Waffle House

Waffle House Crew – The Early Days!

Waffle House was founded on Labor Day 1955 in Avondale Estates, Georgia, by neighbors Joe Rogers Sr. and Tom Forkner, who wanted a 24/7 restaurant for their community, focusing on good food, fast service, and friendly faces. It grew from a single location into a Southern icon, known for its classic American diner fare, unique ordering lingo, and famous “Waffle House Index,” used by FEMA to gauge storm severity due to its consistent operation during disasters. The original location is now a museum, preserving the history of the founders and the brand’s distinctive culture, including its own record label (Waffle Records) and commitment to employee benefits.
