The modern sandwich was popularized in England in the 18th century by John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, who ate meat between two slices of bread to avoid leaving his gambling table. However, similar dishes existed earlier, such as 1st-century B.C. rabbi Hillel the Elder wrapping fillings between two pieces of matzah for Passover and ancient Romans eating stuffed flatbread. Sandwiches spread globally, becoming a staple in the 20th century, especially in America, due to the convenience of pre-sliced bread and portability.
